Solo Exhibition: Transcendental
Jocelyn Tsaih

Dates: February 21 - March 21, 2026
Reception: February 21 | 6-8 PM

Glass Rice is proud to present Transcendental, Jocelyn Tsaih’s sophomore solo exhibition. This new body of paintings, sculptures, and drawings transforms everyday details into portals of identity and perception, inviting viewers into abstract realms shaped by the subtleties of human experience.

Though Tsaih works across various mediums, the connective thread throughout her practice has long been her depiction of amorphous figures. Often situated within abstracted, liminal spaces, these figures touch upon both the emotional depth and the otherworldliness of human experience. Acting as extensions of the artist herself, they reflect her upbringing between multiple cultures and worlds - an existence shaped by the nuances of the “in-between.” Within these constructed spaces, both figure and artist are free to simply be. Through color, form, and composition, Tsaih creates atmospheres charged with mood, curiosity, and introspection.

In Transcendental, this signature figure evolves. While it no longer always appears directly, it becomes embedded within the architecture of the work itself. Inspired by overlooked architectural and domestic elements - a doorway’s frame, objects resting on a windowsill, the intricate pattern of an iron gate - Tsaih renders quiet moments into luminous oil paintings. Gradients of saturated color and forms reminiscent of stained glass and ornamental grilles create abstract thresholds that offer only glimpses of what lies beyond. These visual passages function as vessels, holding the layered emotions that come with observation ana introspection.

Developed during a recent residency in Mexico City, the works emerged from Tsaih’s encounter with a new urban landscape. Fragments of architecture, texture, and shifting light are translated into abstraction, distilling the energy and personality of the spaces she inhabited. This body of work marks a subtle but significant shift - from depicting the human figure directly to evoking presence through the environmental traces that define a place and its people. The once-amorphous figure expands outward, becoming spatial, architectural, and immersive.

The result is a series that feels at once intimate and expansive. Transcendental is an invitation to look closer, to recognize the overlooked, and to consider identity through a renewed language of color, texture, and form.
