Solo Exhibition: Broke Boys Get Fixed
Tyler Deaveau
Dates: November 13 - Dec 6, 2021
Reception: Saturday, November 13 | 5 - 8 PM
Glass Rice is proud to present Broke Boys Get Fixed, Houston-based multimedia collage artist Tyler Deauvea’s debut solo exhibition with the gallery. The work in this show serves as a visual representation of emotional checkpoints for the artist over the last year and a half. By cultivating a distinct group of characters in what the artist calls The Book of Zoe - an index and guide to understanding the symbolic characters represented in his work - Deauvea utilizes them as a vehicle to navigate through intense personal moments, transitions into new life phases, and deep emotional growth through the lens of a Black man in America.
With digital collage being his predominant medium over the years, Deauvea defined the likeness of his characters through this practice. The most striking and common feature of the figurative beings are their eyes, most often, pupil-less hollow white ovals. Despite being flat in color, the alluring quality of their eyes appear as wells of light - drawing viewers in to captivating scenes of relatable yet anonymous figures surrounded by cartoon characters, bursts of color and lively patterns in their clothing, jewelry, and backdrops. Deauvea highlights common, yet isolating parts of the human experience through this electrifying technique to even further relate to and pull viewers in. All of these qualities can be seen in CAN I BORROW A DOLLAR?. In this particular piece, he focuses on the redundancy of needing help and the recognition that solutions to these problems are only temporary moments of relief.
Deauvea carries these qualities over to his canvas collages as well, a new approach he began exploring in the midst of the Pandemic. In shifting to a more tactile and traditional medium, the artist continues to explore the discomforts of pushing personal growth boundaries, artistic instability, and financial unease in this new practice.
By creating pieces in this vain, Deauvea’s process allows him to manifest not only a visual diary of his emotional state, but embark on a spiritual journey within himself to make peace with negative feelings, process, accept, and ultimately construct a more welcoming future. With such a uniquely developed and relatable lexicon of symbols and figures, a body of new work, and a newfound outlook on life, this show serves as a chapter passed with new beginnings on the horizon.
__________
The opening reception will run from 5 - 8 pm on November 13th and is open to the general public for walk-ins. Private appointments can be made on our website to view the exhibition after the opening reception through December 6th. Masks are required inside the gallery if you are not enjoying a beverage.
