Glass Rice is proud to present Clarence Feels Disconnected, a solo show of new works by Josh Sanders, as told through the world of Clarence.
In an internet-driven world where communication has brought us closer than ever, a lack of empathy can grow with every video we watch and every ‘like’ button we hit. Our increasingly hyper connected world allows users to interface and relate with one another from all corners of the earth; however, the quality of our connections and relationships continues to deteriorate as an algorithmic chasm grows between us, driving us further into our own vanities and beliefs.
In Clarence Feels Disconnected, Sanders takes a critical yet playful view on social and cultural norms by using Clarence’s bubblegum pink and aqua blue saturated world to inversely reflect the tarnished aspects of our contemporary society. The pink and blue color scheme is continuously displayed throughout the artwork, seeping onto the gallery walls themselves, fully immersing you into a mirrored world of our own culture. The walls are painted in 3 shades of pink, creating a pixelated effect, with paintings, digital art, and sculpture created in a similar blocking technique, inundating the viewer in various forms. Sanders takes a closer look at what it means to be alive in todays technological generation by focusing on the degradation of humanity, the people who have been forced to live on the fringes of society because of it, and at the root of it all, the technology that exacerbates these issues. Sanders paints familiar scenes of “selfie poses”, dark moments caught on camera in our recent history and references to our contemporary culture are combined with multimedia art and installations, all featured as a day in the life of Clarence.
With this solo exhibition, Sanders hopes to brings to life the disconnect many of us have been feeling for years in our world and hopes to bring us together to challenge this new normal.
