Group Show: Endless Winter
Rachel Barnes, Natalie Ciccoricco, Tom Colcord, Sarah No Special Name, Meghan Shimek & John Vochatzer
Dates: December 7, 2018 - January 5, 2019
Opening Reception: Friday, December 7 | 6-8 pm
Glass Rice is proud to present Endless Winter, a group exhibition showcasing the works of six California based artists and their experience of Winter in the most geographically diverse state. The exhibition is not only an eclectic homage to Winter in California, but is also a distillation of California’s diverse experiential fabric and the emerging voices and talent that color its seasons.
The breadth of work ranges from Sarah No Special Name’s bright satirical oil paintings poking fun at the absurdity that is Los Angeles by using Britney Spears circa early 2000’s as her subject, to the minimal geometric embroideries by Natalie Ciccoricco done on found magazine images of California. John Vochatzer dissects how the mind can grapple with seasonal change with surreal collages ranging from grotesque monstrous figures dancing in the desert to portraits of hybrid creatures floating in negative space. Tom Colcord’s luscious oil painting influenced by Photoshop techniques of an abstracted study of his studio garden brings a lighter view of Winter in San Francisco, where the flowers and greenery remain abundant. Rachel Barnes similarly echoes this appreciation of Northern Californian greenery with minimal geometric paintings on wood that each interact with their own succulent. And finally, Meghan Shimek’s doughy wool weavings use the color red to shed light on the wildfires that have ravaged California, green to signify the first bloom of foliage in January, and white as a nostalgic reminder of the first sight of snowfall.
