Glass Rice is proud to present Impressions of Her, our fourth annual all-female group show featuring the works of five artists new to our program and three returning. Now more than ever, effective and compelling visual language feels increasingly important and necessary when it comes to communicating with one another. In a time where facial expressions are only half visible and physical ways of interacting with one another are few and far between, it has become imperative that we develop alternative modes to connect, support and inspire.
Through symbols, color, mark-making and movement, the artists in Impressions of Her have each created new work during this ongoing global pandemic as a means to communicate a plethora of emotions and experiences during this time; loss, hope, nostalgia, joy, and perseverance to name a few. Through their intuitive work, we are reminded of distant environments, poignant sensations and whispers of narratives that can mirror our own.
Karina Bania is a self-taught mixed media painter living in California. Her paintings explore the abstract geographies that we navigate in our lives. She works from intuition, response and presence, with paintings being created fully in the moment. Uncovering interactions, revealing things unseen, and developing connections are what unfold.
Maja Dlugolecki is a mixed-media painter based in Venice, California. With a background in visual design, her work draws from experiences and impressions in her own life through an abstract lens. Maja’s intuitive paintings feature ample white space in between layers of texture, creating movement through bold pigments. she enjoys pushing the limits of color and technique, with an ever evolving palette and method.
Fernanda Martinez is a Mexican artist based in Oakland, California. Fernanda’s art is best recognized for its highly expressive spirit; through her work she explores relationships with our environment by incorporating natural elements as themes, using gouache and acrylic as mediums.
Thai Mainhard was born and raised in Brazil and moved to California in 2010. Her approach to art is "raw and intuitive, each mark relying on a feeling and eternalizing it in mediums, bridging the gap from brain to the heart to ultimately make us feel connected to our spirit. It’s a faith based approach - hoping it all translates into the surface and that it somehow brings resolve, peace and hope in the midst of the chaos.”
Carmen Mcnall is a painter and wood-carver based in Oakland, California. Her work is inspired by the significance of organic items that she has accumulated from places she holds profound connections to, collecting the essence of a place within an object. She meticulously uses mark making as a tool to reflect on the importance of these places and items, the relationships that inherently fasten her to them, and the empowering qualities these items retain.
Eileen Noonan is a multimedia artist based in San Francisco, California. She creates playful and emotionally evocative abstract paintings informed by her sensitivity to the imperceivable. “I ride pure, raw, sometimes demanding, sometimes elusive, fluid energy. Every blank canvas is an opportunity to dissolve into the oneness, connect and bring back what wants to be felt, expressed, ultimately SEEN.” Eileen’s work connects intimately with the world just outside of our ordinary sensory perception.
Xochi Solis is a multimedia artist based in Austin, Texas, while also sharing her studio time between Texas and Mexico. Her works include multilayered, collaged paintings constructed of paint, hand-dyed paper, vinyl, plastics, and images from found books and magazines. Xochi considers the repeated act of layering a meditation on color, texture, and shape all leading to a greater awareness of the visual intricacies found in her immediate environment, both natural and cultural.
Brie Noel Taylor is an abstract painter from London, UK living in San Francisco, CA. Her work responds to the relationship between humans and nature and is inspired by environmental policy and conservation. She works mainly with Prussian blue oils she hand mixes herself to create profoundly washy depths that give the amoebic shapes she paints a strong sense of movement.
