Duo Exhibition: In Essence
Marcel Rozek & Erin Zhao
Dates: October 8 - 29, 2022
Reception: Saturday, October 8 | 4-7 PM
Glass Rice is proud to present In Essence, a duo exhibition of paintings by Marcel Rozek and mixed-media work by Haoyun Erin Zhao. Driven by their deep interest in color relationships and the plethora of ways humans can intrinsically relate to color, both artists approach these topics through distinct practices rooted in their extensive understanding of color theory. Together, their work offers a prismatic look into the innate power color holds over the human psyche and experience.
In his multi-layered stain paintings, Marcel Rozek focuses on discovery within the medium; allowing the interaction between stain painting, color and the space it exists within to become the subject. Rozek begins each painting by pouring diluted liquefied paint onto raw unprimed canvas and letting organic shapes take form from the energy exerted from the act of each pour. In some works, viewers are absorbed into bottomless layers of color and in others they are urged to visually follow jagged forms of pigments. “As the colors converge, overlap, blend, and bend, they absorb at different rates creating unique color families and blurry, spectral forms. My biggest question is: “What’s possible?”. Despite his methodical approach, Rozek leaves much room for unplanned potential; each painting a probe into a greater discovery for himself, the viewer and his practice as a whole.
For this exhibition, Haoyun Erin Zhao presents a series of new work profoundly influenced by her post-pandemic travels. From geometric abstraction to expressive and fluid brushstrokes, she utilizes techniques such as monotype printmaking, calligraphy painting, and collage to explore the process of construction-deconstruction-reconstruction. In taking apart and melding these methods, she creates her own visual language; giving shape to an array of emotional landscapes. By carefully selecting color palettes and paying particular attention to the interactions between hues, light, form, and material, Zhao mimics and explores the ethereal nature of human consciousness. Her work transcribes the unseen connections between physical objects and non-physical mediums and urges her viewers to journey alongside her in a search for a balance between dualities.
In Essence offers a cavernous look into the innate potential of color. Together, Zhao and Rozek usher viewers to seek inward in the presence of hues; allowing their essence to shape our moods and perceptions.

The opening reception will run from 4 - 7 pm on October 8th and is open to the general public for walk-ins.
