Solo Exhibition: Interiors
Mary Finlayson
Dates: January 25 - February 23, 2019
Opening Reception: Friday, January 25 | 6-8 pm
Artist Talk: Saturday, February 23 | 5 pm
Glass Rice is proud to present a solo exhibition of new works by Mary Finlayson in Interiors. This series is an investigation of the stories that interiors contain, how they are composed and how they reflect our histories.
The artist, who is based in San Francisco, creates flattened interpretations of her immediate surroundings, painting primarily interiors of homes, most recognizably, her own. Her work pays homage to the iconic works of David Hockney, Henri Matisse, and Stuart Davis by borrowing similar bright color palettes, repetitive patterns and forms simplified, yet still creating complex, tightly constructed compositions unique to her own style. In each of her paintings, Finlayson captures an entire room from one viewpoint, simplifying, expanding, flattening the depth of field and cropping the scene from a straight on lens. She fills the space with a series of personal belongings such as boldly patterned rugs, bright furniture, potted plants, sculptures from her personal collection, and other eclectic pieces, all paired with a series of other imagery she has collected through the years from homes and spaces she has visited.
Each painting becomes an amalgamation of both her own personal space and ones she is inspired by, focusing on how an environment can impact one’s identity. In the artist’s own words, “The spaces we inhabit are filled with expressions of our lives. They are at times unique, odd, simple, cluttered, complex or ordinary, but regardless, are always personal.” In doing this, Finlayson begins to build a narrative behind each interior, capturing the intimacy that comes with visiting someones home, the thought behind why an individual chooses to place something in their home and the inspiration one can take away from being immersed in another’s carefully curated space.
Interiors will present a series of paintings on a variety of sizes, as well as debut for the first time painted clay-pottery by the artist. Our gallery will be transformed to replicate her studio, filled with personal belongings of Finlayson’s, breathing new life into our space.
