Glass Rice is proud to present Into the Threshold, Into the Hum, a duo exhibition of new weavings by Mary Grisey and new multidisciplinary work by Christopher M. Tandy. Together they will transform the gallery, inviting us through tangled pathways of shifting shadows that lead to fleeting moments of startling clarity. Grisey and Tandy exhibit together for the first time in this installation driven show. Their work reveals a liminal space between our world and the veiled, another plane where time blurs and what we see become amalgamated artifacts from the present, past, and future.
The crux of this exhibition lies in both Grisey's and Tandy’s wakening of ‘portals’, markers made of organic materials and bygone objects. Tandy’s drawings document the relationship between these portals, the spirit-world, and the subconscious. The figures in his drawings are caught in moments of ritual, as seen in A Thin Place; wielding magical objects or journeying through the unknown - their actions not quite clear, yet stirringly familiar and human. Loose black marks forming archways give hints to outlines of these gateways. Tandy mimics this shape and form throughout his sculptures of tall blackened trees, saturated with charcoal and graphite, and encrusted with pyrite; their skeletal limbs intertwining. Grisey’s three-part weaving, In Essence // The Exalted Octave, made out of handwoven and hand-dyed linen and horsehair, was made during her residency in Guerneville Pond Farm and stands at 7 feet tall. The energy from the land, solitude, gray skies, ravens, and vultures she experienced there are interlocked with the physical weaving. Her nuanced practice of gestural weaving, hand-dying and undoing areas in a simulated process of destruction has become her way of leaving traces of her own spiritual self within it. By embedding pieces of her body, psyche, and energy into her work, Grisey begins to unveil traces of the metaphysical and our physical connection with it, bridging the gap between our collective unconscious to a higher octave.
Into the Threshold, Into the Hum is an examination of deeply rooted worlds and a brief revelation of our relationship to our spirit selves. Through their work, Grisey and Tandy provide beautiful ephemeral moments for those who are curious enough to peer through the veil.
