"Raz na wozie, raz pod wozem"
(Some days you’re on the wagon, others you’re under it)
- Polish proverb
Glass Rice is proud to present Lost / Found, Maja Dlugolecki’s debut solo exhibition with the gallery. Dlugolecki is a mixed media abstract painter based in Los Angeles, CA. With a background in visual design, the artist combines her technical knowledge with pure intuition to create paintings characterized by layered washes and a variety of textures - manifesting movement and emotion through bold pigments. Her work draws from experiences and impressions in her own life through an abstract lens.
Lost / Found is a reflection of not only the last year, but of the perpetual ‘lost and found’ nature of life itself and how we’re affected by these changes. Dlugolecki ruminates on the ever-changing and unpredictability of life, an inescapable constant for us all. By first focusing on her own grief and discovery, Maja’s paintings lay the groundwork for a universal canvas - allowing her audience to imprint their own experiences and emotions. The titles for each of the pieces come from a collection of anonymous answers to the prompt ‘what have you lost? what have you found?’. She paired the responses she received to paintings based on color and emotion - each becoming a herald for another’s story.
Within the visual euphony of emotion actualized, the artist’s paintings challenge new ways of expression through technique; each piece reflecting a specific personal moment in time. In further collecting answers at the show, Dlugolecki hopes to ignite in-person conversations with the intention of creating a greater sense of belonging and understanding of not only ourselves, but of each other as well.
