Group Exhibition: Monster Mash-Up
Tom Colcord, Yumiko Fujiwara, Maria Ikonomou, Katie McCann, Peter Rajani, Christopher M. Tandy, John Vochatzer & Austen Zombres
Dates: October 25 - November 16, 2019
Opening Reception: Friday, October 25 | 6-8 PM
Glass Rice is proud to present Monster Mash-Up, a collage based group show featuring the works of eight returning artists. Inspired by monsters and the myriad of forms they can come in, each artist has approached their construction uniquely. By bringing together stylistically developed artists working in traditional collage, painting, sculpture, drawing, photography and digital art, this show highlights the delicate intricacy and scrupulous nature that comes with creating monstrous creatures and the distinct narratives that haunt them. Despite having such a bad reputation, even the most horrifying looking monsters are no much scarier than the humans who have designed them. Beneath the appearance of each monster lies an ingenious imagination, clever look at the human psyche, and a delicate touch piecing it all together.
Some artists’ approaches include bits and pieces of found imagery in constructing their creatures; a few consist of human heads attached to the torsos of fish with varying sea creature appendages, and portraits of beasts made up of eyeballs, both human and animal limbs, bones and slivers of brain for texture. Others characterize their monsters in the form of a book - pieced together by drawings with some done on Mylar and pages filled with musings and symbols, providing little indication as to what they are, and instead choosing to hone in on the narratives that bring them to life. Monster Mash-Up is an eclectic group show celebrating the diverse nature of collage and the invigorating spirit that drives the continuation of the beautiful and the strange.
