Solo Exhibition: Never Not Now
Karina Bania
Dates: April 2 - 30, 2022
Reception: Saturday, April 2 | 4 - 7 PM
Most humans are never fully present in the now, because unconsciously they believe that the next moment must be more important than this one. But then you miss your whole life, which is never not now.
- Eckhart Tolle
Glass Rice is proud to present Never Not Now, Karina Bania’s debut solo exhibition with the gallery. In this show, Bania presents a series of new paintings; emotionally evocative abstract compositions layered with fragments and forms from our everyday common life. Her work captures quiet meditations and expressions of energy that transcend time, allowing her viewers to sit within the immediacy of the present moment as they are experiencing her work.
As a largely self-taught artist, Bania relies on a harmonious balance of spontaneity, intuition, intention and calculation when creating her work. Oscillating between abstract and form, some of the paintings in this show were created as pairs; two sides of the same coin. She pairs paintings scattered with gestural marks amid amoebic-like shapes with still life scenes of objects, or female figures caught in a self-contained moment. Created together as two expressions of the same feeling, this duality can be seen in Somewhere Else (2022) and Where I Am (2022).
Throughout the work in this exhibition, various shades of cerulean blue remain omnipresent; evoking a deep sense of calm and introspection. Vibrant yet tranquil bursts of light yellow and green, and earthy reds and oranges compliment the deep pools of cool washy pigment and act as energetic markers in the work. Each abstract composition captures its own distinct emotional landscape and distillation of a moment.
Never Not Now is a poignant reminder to remain present. In the artist’s own words, “Throughout our days there are moments that live outside of time. These moments hold an intrinsic beauty that is timeless.” Rather than seek out moments of importance and beauty, Bania urges her audience to allow the present, no matter how mundane, wash over our minds at any given moment; to exist in “the now” and to truly relish life.
