Solo Exhibition: Peripheral Vision
Thai Mainhard
Dates: November 5 - December 3, 2022
Reception: Saturday, November 5 | 4 - 7 PM
Glass Rice is proud to present Peripheral Vision, Thai Mainhard’s debut solo exhibition with the gallery. In her newest body of work, Mainhard centers her focus on the subtle moments of the everyday, harkening back to her time spent in San Francisco years ago. As the place of her first solo exhibition of her career and where she lived for close to nine years, many memories and stories from that time are infused in the work in this exhibition.
By carefully and instinctually using line, shape, and color in her unique abstract style, she calls to past experiences while also intentionally leaving room for viewers to create their own interpretations. Sections of black and white paint root most of her paintings as the base layer. As she continues to build each emotional landscape on the canvas, segments of solid color covered with gestural swirls, shapes and other types of mark-making reveal a greater narrative and feeling.
Peripheral Vision brings to light that the experiences of mundane daily occurrences can actually shape life as a whole - ultimately becoming what makes up our memories and personal histories. In the artists’ words, “Most of the time peripheral vision is blurred, not as emphatic as most things we focus on”. With an acute attention to these things, Mainhard calls attention to and brings into evidence the concept that the blurry is just as important as the sharp with her paintings.
__________
The opening reception will run from 4 - 7 pm on November 5th and is open to the general public for walk-ins. Private appointments can be made on our website to view the exhibition after the opening reception through December 3rd.
